Tallbo 4m wide
Tallbo 20 with terrace

The most popular of all our log cabins is the Tallbo, and the four metre wide models are the most popular in the Tallbo range. At four metres or thirteen feet wide they fit comfortably into most gardens. A Tallbo cabin can usually be erected in your garden without planning permission so long as it is positioned more than two metres from your neighbours boundary. These cabins make ideal home offices, play rooms, studios, or as extra accommodation for family.

Standard Equipment

All Tallbo 4m wide log cabins have the following in common.

  • 58mm Pine Logs - The exterior logs are the most important part of a cabin. Poor quality wood is a false economy, and it is not simply a matter of how thick the logs are. The quality is much more important than thickness. Our logs are made only from Pine (Pinus Sylvestris) which is harder and denser than the Spruce logs most cabins on the market are made from. Our logs are sourced only from the far North of Sweden near the Arctic circle never from the Baltic, states or Russia, and not even from the South of Sweden. The reason is because the further North the trees come from the slower growing they are and the better the wood quality. The wood used by Jorntrahus in the Tallbo cabin is at least seventy years old when it is cut, and the average age is ninety years old.. The benefit to you of using such high quality wood is prolonged life of the cabin without the unsightly splits you get in cheap cabins.
  • Double glazed windows - Tallbo log cabins are fitted with glass double glazed windows in Pine frames with a 16mm gap between the two panes of glass. The U value of the windows is 1.6U which is likely to be better than the double glazing in your house.  (The lower the U value the less heat is lost from the windows. Building regulations require the U value to be 2.0 or less) the windows come fitted with brass catches and stays.
  • Insulated door - The door of a Tallbo has Pine facing over an insulated core with a double glazed panel at the top. The U value of the door is 1.0U. (UK building regulations require front doors to have a U value less than 2.0) The door is fitted with a secure cylinder lock with a thumb turn opening on the inside.
  • Pine floorboards - The floor is a suspended Pine floor made from 22mm tongue and grooved floorboards a second blind floor is fitted underneath the floor joists to create a space for floor insulation.
  • Suspended Pine ceiling - The ceiling is made from 15mm tongue and grooved Pine with a space above for insulation, and for airflow on the underside of the roof.
  • Roof - The roof is constructed from both purlins and joists fully covered with wood sarking to make a solid roof capable of bearing 300kg per square metre. The roof is strong enough to take any kind of roofing material including concrete tiles or a turf roof. As standard the roof is covered with a heavy duty mineral felt.

Options

Our Tallbo log cabins are made to order, so there is no problem positioning windows in different locations, or other customisations. Examples of upgrade options available are :-

  • Terrace - Five square metre terrace with handrail, and covered by overhanging roof.
  • Taller windows - Standard windows are 800mm high, the window upgrade option gives 1000mm high windows (Requires extra log option as well to raise ceiling height)
  • Extra Log Option - Your cabin may have one or two extra rows of logs in the walls to raise the ceiling height while still not requiring planning permission. (Handy for Snooker tables)
  • Triple glazed windows - If you want truly excellent insulation there is the option of triple glazed windows (U value just 1.0U)
  • Wall Insulation - If the cabin is to be used as permanent sleeping accommodation it has to meet full Building Regulations. To achieve this we cover the inside walls with insulation which is then clad with log profiled Pine cladding to look exactly like the exterior logs.
  • Choice of interior wall cladding - If desired the interior wall insulation can be clad with particle board or plasterboard to make the interior appearance just like an ordinary house.
  • Roof cladding - As an option the roof could be clad with felt shingles, a steel tile effect roof, or with concrete or clay tiles. Scanvista can even supply a turf roof.

Foundations

Post foundationTallbo cabins are normally positioned on concrete posts set into the ground. The posts are usually precast high density concrete blocks from a builders merchant set on their end on a bed of concrete. These post foundations are considerably cheaper than paying a builder to cast a concrete slab for you, and much better for the environment because concrete production is very energy intensive. Standing the Tallbo cabin on posts allows air to circulate underneath which keeps the wood dry and prevents rot. Most other cabins on the market require a concrete base because their floor joists are not strong enough and need support from concrete underneath.  Tallbo cabins have very strong joists so the floor will not feel 'springy'.

An alternative to the concrete post foundation is the 'Buzon'. A Buzon is an adjustable plastic pillar that stands on a paving slab which has been well bedded down on sand. A Buzon is even easier to install than a concrete post, and because they are adjustable it is not even necessary to worry about getting them level. Smaller Buzons are recommended when the Tallbo is to be placed on an already existing concrete base just to lift the wood off the concrete a little.
